Bangkok

Mike McDermott
Hi All,

I'm in Bangkok for a few more days. Does anyone remember our agent there, and know if he's still around or not?

He gave me three bottles of Scotch once when he turned up in Kathmandu with a bunch of Buddhist pilgrims without anyone there knowing anything about them coming! Does anyone remember that? One of our buses took the group to Pokhara and swapped punters with another Sundowners bus there, who turned around and took them back to London.

Oops. I recall that the trip was pretty bad. It was winter. Maybe I should keep my head down; he might want those bottles of whisky back.

Hi Mike
Our agent in Bangkok was
Superchai
Rajata Tours
1/28-29 Soi Saladaeng
Silom Road
Bangkok
tel:233 1953
Sam Slade <yes that was his real name> was a mate of KD and a punter on one of Budgie and Tadpole overlands, ran a bar there.
I would doubt any of the above would still be around.
Gunna lives in Pattaya ,as does Richard Hewitt ex Top Deck courier
Cheers
Rocky

Colin, I think you could well be right. It rings some very distant bells.
That's a pretty impressive feat of memory!

Rocky, thanks for the above. As expected, no trace found, but there was a very remote chance ...

Hi, I am a close friend of Sam Slade from his days in Bangkok.

Di you locate him? I believe he is in poor health.

Brian or Ken Duckworth also drove the overland route London to Sydney. Where is he?

Hope you can help.

Hi Colin,

Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right, because I think it was Groucho who told me about the trip when I got back to London. The Buddhists were pilgrims, used to Thai weather, and had no experience of the cold. The crew had a hard time, but at the end were thanked by all for the great job they had done.

Hi Tony,

No I didn't find Sam Spade, Tony; sorry.

Also sorry for being almost a month late in replying. I went away to Africa, and have only just got back.
